Skin is a wonderfully complex organ, and the most expansive.
It is kind of strange to think of your skin as an organ, but it is!
The definition of an organ:
'A part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function...'
Our skin has many specialized functions - one of which is protection - think of it like traffic control. Orderly movement in and out.
Our skin is porous, though, and aqueous (water based) solutions are easily absorbed.
Why does this matter?
Water is a major ingredient in skincare!
It serves to hydrate and moisturize and repair - super important in any skin routine.
Unfortunately this property is also the same method by which skin may be irritated, and damaged as water soluble irritants in many products penetrate and upset the skin barrier.
This can happen right away, or over time.
I'm careful not to use the word 'chemicals' here, because this is merely a way to identify different compounds.
Not a way of categorizing what is good or bad.
Skin health is one of the main reasons we enjoy using natural oils, plant infusions and essential oils in skincare, and why it is of the utmost importance that fragrances are paraben and phthalate free - they can be absorbed!
Whether you place a product on your scalp, your lips, or the soles of your feet - it will serve you well to evaluate what you are using and pay attention to what your skin is saying...
The one you love may not be loving you back!
Regardless of where the product is coming from, the notoriety, the price tag, or the claims, if your skin objects - my Friend, it is not for you.
